Public River Access
Paddling the North Fork of the Shenandoah River is one of the best ways to experience its natural beauty—but it comes with a few considerations. During summer, low water levels may require paddlers to walk their boats through shallow sections. The river’s main hazards include six dams (located upstream of Timberville, between Edinburg and Woodstock, and between Strasburg and Riverton) as well as low-water bridges, which can become obstacles depending on water levels.
There are several public access points throughout Shenandoah County—including Seven Bends State Park, New Market, Edinburg, Woodstock, and Strasburg—each offering its own unique charm and scenery.
Please remember: most of the land along the river is privately owned. You may only enter and exit the river at designated public access sites.
